The 80/20 Approach

Life includes birthday cake, late-night movies, pizza, and the rare hangover. RARE. Once again, for the people in the back, RARE.

A big misconception is that you need to “get it right” 100% of the time. That’s not realistic — or joyful. So, I can’t subscribe to that nonsense as it is a recipe for disappointment and self-destruction.

A more sustainable approach is aiming for 80% nourishing choices and 20% flexibility. If most of your meals include whole, satisfying foods, and most of your week includes rest and movement, then you’re already doing the work. The 20% leaves room for life’s pleasures without guilt.

This mindset takes away the pressure of perfection and keeps wellness feeling supportive rather than restrictive.

Practical Ways to Stay in Tune

  • Pause before choices. Ask yourself: Am I hungry, thirsty, tired, or stressed?

  • Track energy, not just food. Notice how you feel after meals or habits. Energized? Bloated? Calm? Wired?

  • Rest when your body asks. Sometimes skipping a workout in favor of sleep is the healthiest choice.

  • Create mini check-ins. Morning stretch, midday walk, evening reflection — quick moments to scan how you feel.

  • Practice self-compassion. If you overeat, skip a workout, or stay up too late, it doesn’t erase your progress. Learn, adjust, move forward.

Why It Matters

When you learn to listen, your body becomes less of a battle and more of a guide. You start making choices that support your energy, mood, and long-term health naturally, instead of following rigid rules that don’t fit your life.

The goal isn’t perfection; it’s alignment. By honoring your body 80% of the time, you create space for joy, balance, and sustainability. And often, that’s what health really is — not a flawless routine, but a compassionate relationship with yourself.
